Heritage Science Group: Oddy and Air Exchange Testing with David Thickett

Please join us at The Victoria & Albert Museum for a one-day in person course on Oddy and Air Exchange Testing!

The Icon Heritage Science Group presents a 1-day workshop on Oddy and Air Exchange Testing held at Victoria & Albert Museum, 10am-5pm.

This workshop is designed as an introduction or refresher to the theory and practice of Oddy Testing of materials for use in display and storage of cultural heritage collections, as well as theory on air exchange measurements. It will include a presentation and discussion of the theory and method of Oddy Testing as it is currently practiced, as well as practical sessions in the labs at Victoria & Albert Museum covering the setup of samples and equipment.

David Thickett, Senior Conservation Scientist with English Heritage will lead the sessions, assisted by colleagues and members of the V&A and HSG Committee.

All equipment and materials will be provided. The workshop is not catered, but participants are welcome to bring their own lunch and drinks. This event will be held in-person and joining instructions and further information will be provided on registration.

David Thickett

Following a degree in natural sciences and two years of experience in industrial ceramics research, David Thickett joined the British Museum in 1990 with a specialism in preventive conservation and inorganic materials conservation research. Moving to English Heritage in 2003 as Senior Conservation Scientist, David focuses mainly on preventive conservation research, gaining his PhD in archeological conservation and chemistry in 2012. His recent projects have focused on historic house environments, acoustic emission, collections demography and epidemiology, non-destructive testing, microclimate frames and optical coherence tomography.
