English Heritage (Deadline 22/10/2024)

07 Oct 2024

English Heritage are looking for a Conservation Science Technician to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis, working 36 hours per week.

This is an incredible opportunity to support analysis and research to inform preventive conservation across English Heritage’s estate. As our Conservation Science Technician, you will assist in running the recently refurbished conservation science lab at Ranger’s House and the mobile laboratory for onsite analysis. You will use a range of analytical techniques and interpret the results, with the support of other scientists, as well as training other users and supervising the use of these techniques. The role will follow a CPD programme and participate in lab sustainability initiatives.

You will be based at Ranger’s House, but with a national remit that will entail extensive travel around England. Travel will include overnight stays for blocks of 5 continuous days, outside of London, for a minimum of 4-8 periods per year. Half of the visits will be to English Heritage sites, with the other half to support analysis on site at other institutions and organisations.

What’s more, as part of our charity bringing history to life, you’ll be supported and encouraged to share your ideas, inspire others and make a difference to the way England’s rich past is experienced.

To be considered as a Conservation Science Technician, you will need:

A degree in physical sciences (or equivalent experience) and experience working as a lab technician, or working in a lab, or in the field. Previous experience training others in use of analytical equipment and supporting researchers to use equipment. Previous experience of planning site work, moving equipment or labs. Experience of handling chemicals, writing COSHH assessments and carrying out risk assessments. Interest in historic collections, buildings and sites. Full UK driving licence and willingness to work on sites across England.
