The European Cultural Heritage Green Paper “Putting Europe’s shared heritage at the heart of the European Green Deal” was published at a launch webinar yesterday on 22 March 2021.
The Green Paper highlights the ways in which cultural heritage can contribute to achieving the goals of the European Green Deal.
The report outlines the capacities of cultural heritage to support all key areas of the Green Deal, including Clean Energy, Circular Economy, Renovation Wave, Smart Mobility, Farm to Fork, Green Finance and a Just Transition, Research and Innovation, Education and Training, as well as Green Deal Diplomacy.
The Paper proposes a series of recommendations both for policy-makers and for cultural heritage stakeholders.
The European Cultural Heritage Green Paper was produced by Europa Nostra in collaboration with ICOMOS and the Climate Heritage Network, with the input of members of the European Heritage Alliance and with the support of the European Investment Bank Institute.
This ground-breaking document demonstrates the relevance of cultural heritage for achieving the ambitious goals of the European Green Deal, launched by the European Commission to make Europe the first carbon-free continent by 2050.

Europa Nostra plans to launch a European multi-stakeholder platform on heritage and climate action as a follow up to the report in order to ensure the efficient implementation of the proposed recommendations.
Icon Chief Executive Sara Crofts is Chair of Europa Nostra UK and a member of the international steering group of the Climate Heritage Network. As a part of this activity, Icon is co-ordinating Activity 1 of the Madrid-to-Glasgow Arts, Culture and Heritage Climate Action Plan (COP26).
