Icon Publishes its Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Policy

Icon has published its Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Policy following approval by the board in December 2024.

20 Feb 2025

As a membership and representative organisation, employer, and charity, Icon is deeply committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), placing these values at the heart of everything we do to ensure inclusive action within Icon and across the conservation profession.

EDI are a set of ethical principles, key to ensuring supportive environments for groups and individuals including people of colour and those of with disabilities, different ethnicities, religions, genders, and sexual orientations.

Icon's EDI Policy Objectives

Icon works to ensure the organisation actively realises the following five policy objectives:

  • EDI in workplace culture (Staff, Board, and Volunteers)
  • Representing diversity through advocacy
  • EDI best practice in recruitment and training (Staff, Board, and Membership)
  • Diversity in membership.
  • Organisational value of EDI practice

Icon's Definition of Diversity

Underpinning the policy is Icon's definition of diversity, which aligns with the definition defined in The Equality Act (2010). Icon's definition further includes Socioeconomic background and status, ethnicity, regional and social identities, and the wider LGBT+ community.

EDI Objectives and Deliverables

To acheive these objectives, Icon has developed a series of actions designed to embed EDI in to all aspects of our work, ensuring our progress is measurable and meaningful.

Importantly, we have defined outcomes for each of these actions, demonstrating how we are meeting our key objectives and driving positive change within Icon and the wider conservation profession.

Some of these outcomes have already been achieved, whilst others are actively being worked on as part of our ongoing commitment to EDI.
