National Museums Liverpool is looking to recruit an Objects Conservators with experience in the care and conservation of a wide range of collections to join our project team and play a key role in the delivery phase of a major capital project to transformation of the International Slavery Museum (ISM) and Maritime Museum (MM).

This exciting redevelopment involves a major decant of collections currently on display within both museums and the reimagining and development of stories to be told through NML’s world class collections. The post holder will treat a wide variety of collections which have been selected for redisplay within the newly designed galleries and make considered assessment of new loans and acquisitions.

Job Purpose

Reporting to NML’s Project Collections Coordinator, the post holder will provide key collection care support for the project through the assessment and treatment of object selected for re-display within the redeveloped galleries. The post holder will also support the team throughout gallery decant and recant, liaising with curatorial and collection care staff and offering advice and support throughout.

What you’ll be doing – Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake any required condition surveys of vulnerable objects prior to decant, document as required considering object stability to inform the object decant.
  • Produce condition reports as required to support decant decisions.
  • Treat objects highlighted as requiring treatment to stabilise and improve aesthetics according to priority order in support of project schedule and design and installation deadlines.
  • Carry out assessments, treatment and research of collections to a high standard. Ensure that all work and documentation is undertaken accurately and to appropriate standards.
  • Update NML’s collections management system Mimsy with object condition or treatment information in a timely manner following assessments or treatments.
  • Advise on conservation requirements for the loan of ISM / MM collections and support the preparation of loans.
  • Support the production of specifications as required for the protection of any objects remaining in situ during building works.
