Dunham Massey, National Trust (Deadline 01/02/2025)
An exiting opportunity to work alongside accredited paper conservators on a practical paper conservation project.
Nestled between the vibrant city of Manchester and the beginnings of rural Cheshire, Dunham Massey includes a 300-acre deer park, a historic house and buildings, and all-season gardens.
The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity is available in 2025 to work on a hands-on paper conservation project, engaging with National trust visitors about their work.
The team at Dunham Massey wish to undertake a re-imagining of a significant part of their extensive collection of local, regional, national and world maps. The ongoing project stems from research conducted for the sundial project at Dunham Massey; investigating a map in the collection to prove or dispel colonial involvement in the development of the Dunham Massey estate during the 17th century. Many of the maps are understood to have been displayed on the walls in the ‘Front Gallery’, later known as the Map Gallery in the 19th century.
During 2025 seven large scale maps will be conserved and displayed once again within the house. Two of the seven maps will be treated at the house by accredited Paper Conservators Emily O’Reilly and Lydia Stirling.
About You
As part of the project the team are seeking expressions of interest from student paper conservators or recent graduates to assist in the onsite work at Dunham Massey.
Students will be provided with board and lodgings nearby for the weeks proposed and will be expected to work for the 5 days Monday to Friday. The weeks proposed are 6th to 12th April and 6th to 12th July 2025.
